| Presentation Title: | 21 steps for 21st Century Learning |
| Presenter: | Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, 21st Century Collaborative, USA |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
As the people of the world are becoming increasingly connected, the nature, use, ownership, and purpose of knowledge are changing in profound ways. Our goal as educators is to leverage these connections and changes as powerful means to improve teaching and learning in our schools. Using digital media and web-based tools, students are building their own learning experiences, constructing meaning, and collaborating in teams to solve authentic content-based problems. Many teachers who use these empowering technologies are now discovering we can have rigor without sacrificing excitement. The secret: Focus on student passion and interest, not the machines and software.
Come listen as Sheryl stirs a sense of urgency for shifting classroom practice through her 21 steps for 21st Century educators and leaders. Sheryl invites you to discuss this (and other 21st Century teaching and learning topics) on her blog: http://21stcenturylearning.typepad.com |

| Presentation Title: | BSF Showcase - a vision of learning in a connected community |
| Presenter: | Chris Poole, Building Schools for the Future, UK |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
If the BSF investment is about transformation then it is certain the stakeholders are engaged on a journey, not an event.
But what does that destination look like and, most importantly, what could the experience of learners and others be in a connected and "smart" community. We have recently published a series of interlinked BSF Guides to help schools and Local Authorities envision, plan and deploy solutions to support a change agenda in their areas. Now building on the models, guidance and narratives contained in the BSF guides, the BSF Showcase attempts to illustrate the experience of teachers, learners and parents, who are also citizens, in a connected learning community - "what might that experience look like?"
Can BSF be a catalyst to shift the agenda from new buildings towards community renewal? What of the local authorities with a radical agenda for change who view BSF as being less about the connected learner and more about the world of the connected citizen able to create not just consume services.
Technology alone will not transform learning, but learning will not be transformed to meet modern citizens' expectations and needs without it. |

| Presentation Title: | Building the foundations for a digital school: A journey towards 21st century teaching and learning. |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
Many schools today are facing the challenge presented by increasing pressure to prepare their students for an unknown future in the information driven society of the 21st century. Technology, as either a catalyst or a transformative agent is increasingly seen as a key component in addressing this challenge. Like many other schools Brigidine College had an infrastructure that was disparate, non-integrated somewhat unreliable and had grown like topsy over the last decade in response to different paths ICT in education has taken.
Karen will share with you Brigidine College's journey over the last nine months in planning and creating an infrastructure and systems to support their Principal's vision of changing the teaching and learning paradigms from teacher centred to student centric, from solely classroom based delivery to any time, anywhere learning using technologies such as Microsoft Exchange 2007, Unified Messaging, Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Portal 2007. |

| Presentation Title: | Identity Management Project |
| Presenter: | Graham Perry, Aquinas College, WA |
| Presenter: | Peter Klemm, Perth College, WA |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
4 Schools have collaborated to develop a solution to the problem of maintenance of user accounts for the various systems that staff, students and parents (possibly) access. There is a very clear understanding that the definitive source for all user information lies within the administration system (in this case, Synergetic).
All schools partaking in the Identity Management project share the same core directory systems being Edirectory, Active Directory, Sharepoint (Scholaris) and Synergetic (Administration Package). This project is primarily aimed at ensuring data is correctly synchronised between these systems and to eliminate the manual processes (and hence possible delays) in the generation of user accounts when they occur during the year (zero day start) and at year end (year group rollover).
All code created should be modularised and well documented (internally) to allow for easier modification after initial deployment. Business rules code should be easily able to be changed from active to inactive.
The project has been developed with a view to being easily transportable to different sites and cater for different business rules.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the Identity Management project utilising Synergetic as the authoritative source are as follows:
Provisioning of Student accounts to Edirectory, AD, Sharepoint and Groupwise/Exchange
Provisioning of Staff accounts from creation in Synergetic to Edirectory, AD, Sharepoint, Groupwise/Exchange and SQL
Provisioning of Parent accounts to AD, and Sharepoint Portal.
Synchronisation of passwords across all systems, including the SQL user in Synergetic database.
Return of required data (eg network login, email address) to Synergetic.
The secondary objectives of this project include
Synchronisation with other systems that may be in use within the school, such as library, security and telephone systems.
Creation of dynamic security groups based on timetable class membership |

| Presentation Title: | New Technology High Schools - Getting Results that Matter for the 21st Century |
| Presenter: | Paul Curtis, New Technology Foundation, USA |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
Even the most innovative schools in the USA, the UK, and Australia often hit the wall in trying to transform learning for the 21st Century. 1-to-1 computing and a technology learning platform do much but by themselves do not lead to 21st Century Learning. Instead a new methodology of standards-based project-based learning, coupled with the appropriate technology tools and a collaborative learning environment, is needed to achieve 21st Century Learning.
Paul Curtis, the Chief Academic Officer of the New Technology Foundation, Napa, CA, will tell the story of the now 35 New Technology High Schools in the US. Students graduate New Technology High School (NTHS) mastering 21st Century Knowledge and Skills through 8 learning outcomes: content standards, collaboration, critical thinking, oral communication, written communication, career preparation, citizenship and ethics, and technology literacy. Paul will share with you New Tech's methodology, practices, and tools for 21st Century Learning. He will show how projects are designed to embed 21st Century Skills, assessments are created to measure these skills, and how a unique "living" skills-based report card gives constant feedback to students and their parents. He will also demonstrate New Tech's Learning System, a suite of technology tools that help teachers design projects, assessment rubrics, and project calendars, and provide students with a "dashboard" environment through which they collaborate, do their work, get constant feedback/assessment of their work, and provide evidence of mastery of 21st Century Knowledge and Skills. |

| Presentation Title: | The A-Z of Computer Security Technology |
| Presenter: | Paul Ducklin, Sophos |
| Session Type: | Featured Presentation |
| |
| Presentation Description: |
Computer threats -- from adware to zombies -- are well-documented, and numerous glossaries exist from which you can learn all about them. But what about the technologies you use in protecting your network against this bestiary of threats?
Unfortunately, a lot of modern security terminology -- try AES, BOPS, DEP, HIPS, NAC, SPF and ZBV for size -- is used indiscriminately by technologists (who often glibly assume that you know what they mean) and marketing experts (who sometimes unscrupulously rely on the fact that you don't).
This talk will teach you to hold your own against even the most determined marketing onslaught. We will look at modern computer security technology, with practical examples. We will also look at _how_ various security technologies work, so you can measure the risks associated with using them, and we will look at _why_ they work that way, so you can evaluate their benefits.
The talk is based around a live demonstration incorporating six or so of the most popular and useful free security tools, aimed at showing you what to look for in free software. We will focus on Windows tools, though many of them are also available for Linux and OS X as well. |
