Virus writers aren't just kids having fun any more. (Not that virus writing was ever really "fun", since it was criminal and unacceptable, but at least writing the virus was almost always the beginning and the end of the crime.)

These days, virus writing has become part of an organised criminality in which malicious programs are merely tools to assist in further crimes, such as spamming, phishing, denial of service, cyberstandover and, perhaps most worryingly at a school, the theft of personally identifying information.

This talk will show modern malware in action (safely, of course), looking at an exploit and at a rootkit. If you are technical, come and learn about software tools (most of them free) which can help you to regain control of "owned" computers. If you aren't technical, come along and scare yourself! You will gain insight into the sort of computer security issues which need to be taken into account when planning tomorrow's IT policies.

Email and Web security is mission critical to educational institutions. However, as threats become more complex and malicious, a new methodology to IT security is needed. On-demand security, or IT security as a service, is fast becoming an acceptable solution for combating these emerging threats by keeping threats off the network while retaining full control like it was an in-house solution.

Dr Richard Cullen, Distinguished Engineer at SurfControl will give an update on the evolving threat landscape and future outlook then deliver the "what, why and how" of on-demand email and Web security by answering questions such as:

• What is on-demand email and Web security?
• What are the benefits?
• How would I integrate it into my existing solution?

It turns out in the end that the internet IS a jungle, and there are some very real dangers. Some of these dangers are clear and obvious, while others are more devious and use social engineering to exploit an innocent user in the same way a vulnerable company is exploited.

The only way to truly reduce the risk of this emerging type of attack is to implement a solution which has Zero Day Protection systems at its core so that the your network’s protection is not dependent on definition updates, but can respond to threats as they emerge on a proactive preventative basis, rather than a reactive or clean up basis.

With RAID controllers becoming standard on most platforms this presents challenges when deploying an Operating System. Be it Windows XP or Windows Vista the deployment of an operating system with the requirement to resolve drivers and integrate applications, if done efficiently, can be one of the best opportunities to reduce notebook ownership cost or conversely add to cost if not done correctly. Keith will demonstrate some of the tools that he uses and the resources available from Toshiba as well as an overview of the new tools available for Windows deployments.
