Presentation Title:
10 Innovative Teaching Practices for the 21st Century Classroom.
Presenter:
Jo Walker, Natalie Cartwright, Natalie Morrissey - Expanding Learning Horizons
Session Type:
TTLI Session

Presentation Description:

Classroom practitioners have always been provided with plenty of information about what to teach through the curriculum statements supplied to them by education departments. How to deliver the required content, however, is often something that is left as a decision for the individual teacher to make in line with their own teaching style and the nature of both the content itself and the students to whom it is delivered.

During this TTLI session, we will be focusing on what latest research refers as "Top 10 Innovative Teaching Practices". Teachers from all curriculum areas are invited to bring along their units work for a day of learning about new tools and ideas. We will also look at the ways these innovative practices will enhance the learning outcomes in their classrooms and engage the use of technology in a rich and purposeful way.

Desire2Learn: providing the framework for the digital revolution
Presenter:
Mark Yaxley, Ian Smissen - Desire2Learn
Session Type:
Optional Presentation Session

Presentation Description:

Like any good revolution, the digital revolution has introduced disruptive technologies, and offered a plethora of new tools and approaches to both enhance and transform teaching and learning. Like all good revolutions, however, there comes a point where a framework is required to make sense of it all, providing the benefits of the revolution to all stakeholders in education, and delivering tangible improvements in teaching and learning throughout the school.

The Desire2Learn learning suite provides schools with an opportunity to reshape their curriculum, and align their learning outcomes within their own pedagogical framework, reducing teacher workload, increasing personalisation, whilst capitalizing on the tools of the digital revolution to engage students, be they hardware, or the latest Web 2.0 tool.

  • a pedagogically aligned framework that reflects the way each school teaches and learns
  • simple upgrade pathways for current digital content input - drag and drop course creation
  • create curriculum and assessment aligned course blueprints through the Instructional Design Wizard
  • student progress tracking, alerts and competency achievement
  • integrated web 2.0 technologies into course structures
  • personalized learning through the ePortfolio
  • parental engagement in the learning process

This session will give attendees a clear idea of the advantage Desire2Learn can bring to the school, be it in maximizing their use of technology, or truly aligning their technology to their teaching and learning goals and including all stakeholders in the learning journey.

Beyond the Bells and Whistles - Embedding ICTs to Ensure Rigour and Teacher Satisfaction
Presenter:
Daniel Groenewald - Methodist Ladies' College, VIC
Session Type:
Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

The emergence of affordable ICTs and the concomitant pressure to make better and more frequent use of them from educational administrators (curriculum leaders, principals, curriculum authorities) has generated many teacher challenges and concerns. Many teachers worry that their students are not learning more effectively with ICTS and that their implementation is often unplanned, superficial and ad hoc. If we are to be successful users of ICT, we must address these concerns. By stressing the importance of methodology and rigour in the use of ICTs, this presentation aims to offer an antidote to these concerns.. In this presentation, we will explore practical, innovative, engaging and student centred ways that teachers can use ICTs to enhance their teaching and student learning. We will look at digital storytelling, humour, rapping, podcasts, animations, adverts, films, web pages, web quests and lots more (examples explored are taken from a context of English teaching). The purpose of this presentation is to affirm teacher experiences of ICTs and support them to plan and use ICTs in a more relevant, meaningful and educationally sound way.

Effective Differentiation in a 1:1 Tablet Classroom
Presenter:
Paul Diete - Anglican Church Grammar School, QLD
Session Type:
Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

Differentiation has been a "buzz" word in education in recent years, as many education systems and school endeavour to provide education for all students. However, facilitating effective differentiation is much more difficult to implement, as the spectrum of student abilities gets wider and wider. This session will outline the Australian Government Quality Teacher Project (AGQTP) that was undertaken at Churchie, which focused on the effective differentiation in Middle School mathematics through the use of DyKnow. The aim of the project was to utilise the 1:1 teaching and learning environment to facilitate effective and efficient diagnostic assessment to determine student prior knowledge and/or understanding. Teachers then will utilised this information to allocate and connect students into groups of "like-ability" and/or prior knowledge and to differentiate the ensuing instruction. Finally, the project focused on the ability of 1:1 technology to share and disseminate student work across the class, so that all students (no matter their level of ability) will have examples of their peers' responses to classroom work at all levels of difficulty. The key software applications that were utilised were DyKnow and Microsoft OneNote.

Presentation Title:
Empowered by Immersion
Presenter:
Lou Deibe, Rowena Beale - Northern Beaches Christian School, NSW
Session Type:
Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

The Northern Beaches Christian School Learning Matrix blends open spaces, hundreds of students, collaborative teaching and a one-to-one personal digital device program to deliver exciting, innovative matrices of multiple integrated and differentiated activities.

The success of this program has been extraordinary. All students are engaged and motivated, and are directing and managing their projects with initiative and resourcefulness. In the deliberate transfer of the teacher from didactic imparter of information and content to mentor and coach, the facilitator is far better able to target student needs, thus enabling evaluation and assessment to become truly formative for each and every student. This includes the shift in emphasis from writing programs to writing on-line resources, assessing and reporting on-line and encouraging students to immerse themselves in the latest technologies. This creates an individualised program for each student which can be accessed from anywhere in the world 24/7.

A successful 21st century learning environment must, by definition, be immersed in technology both as a teaching tool and as a means of developing student skills and expertise in a digital age.

Myth or Reality: Classroom + Computer = Better Classroom?
Presenter:
Tim Osborne - St Paul's School, QLD
Session Type:

Longer term learning and strategic projects (such as coaching) have a greater impact and are more likely to lead to lasting change. Teachers at St Paul's are provided professional development for incorporating technology that is aligned to the school's strategic goals and teaching philosophy. The professional development aims to provide continued support through technology mentors/coaches as they embed new ideas into their practice. Useful ideas/strategies will be provided to participants.

Professional Development and the Web
Presenter:
Steven Collis - Northern Beaches Christian School, NSW
Session Type:
Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

In recent years an organic and grassroots movement of educators has arisen over the Internet. Technologies such as Twitter, Second Life, Elluminate, and "Nings" allow collegiality on an entirely new level, with teachers connecting across contexts and distances, exchanging ideas, reporting on experiences, and promoting the best in each other's teaching. For these individuals the online space has proved to be a more effective stimulus for professional development than school meetings, training days, and yes even conferences.

In fact this movement represents a new paradigm for professional learning.

We are slowly moving towards a point where the teachers who do not have an online blog / portfolio will be the conspicuous exceptions.

In this Discovery session the key technologies, especially Twitter and Elluminate, will be presented and explored, and participants will have an opportunity to establish their own online presence and begin to make connection with others.
