Presentation Description:
This session will look at the way Internet safety awareness is being developed at Penrhos College using Web 2.0 tools, tablet notebooks and a variety of applications that encourage students to be creative in their use of technology. A need was recognised by the school to raise awareness of internet safety and in particular, social networking and the implications of 'digital footprints' (electronic trail we create when entering data online). Using the college Portal as the medium for delivery, students were challenged to develop their understanding of net safety by exploring Australian Government endorsed resources such as Hector's World, budd:e, Cyber Quail, CyberNetrix and Wise Up to IT. Screenshots and other learning display methods were uploaded for sharing and peer review. Students were encouraged to utilise learning strengths to create a variety of responses including forum discussion, podcasts, mindmaps, recorded interviews, animations, video and pictorial representations. Practical components will include a very brief demonstration of key ways in which the following learning methods and applications could be used to develop and represent understandings: - Podcasts using Audacity or alternatives to record and export mp3 files
- Mindmaps using Inspiration 8 IE or alternatives
- Multimedia presentations using Windows Movie Maker, PhotoStory 3, Animoto or other alternatives
- Graphic organisers and other educationally valuable representations using Microsoft Office
- Web 2.0 interaction and collaboration using Sharepoint Server and Scholaris
- Screen capture and use of graphics applications such as Paint to prepare for uploading

Presentation Description:
ICT in teaching and learning must enrich the learning experience, motivate reluctant learners and develop a deeper understanding of inquiries. It should create excitement, not stress; ownership, not qualification. It must cater for a wide range of abilities and learning styles, as well as independence and team work. E-zines motivate students to learn and produce their best work. Their writing is given structure, purpose and an audience. Because of the quality of the final product, students feel authentic and responsible. They become authentic, published journalists, Students are no longer anxious about their approximations in the semantics of writing, yet understand that these conventions are fundamental to each reader. E-zines are a celebration of all the student knows. In the discovery session, participants will be briefly introduced to the concept of a class magazine in its online form through an example from the presenter's class, Participants will be shown free online resources for publishing - from layouts to uploading an interactive magazine. In addition, the presenter will discuss class organisation and logistics involved in class e¬zine publishing. Session participants will then partake in a workshop creating their own e-zine. Presentation Description:
The session will provide a presentation of the Professional Development implementation at St Paul's. The course will challenge participants as it confronts the traditional methodology of professional development. Research strongly suggests that one-off professional development activities have little to no effect. Longer term learning and strategic projects (such as coaching) have a greater impact and are more likely to lead to lasting change. Teachers are instructed through the CRIFD over several weeks by internal and external providers with coaching support for teachers as they embed new ideas into their practice. Useful ideas/strategies will be provided to participants. Participants will be exposed to the financial and educational benefits of this professional development model.

Presentation Description:
The Year 5 Art programme has expanded to include the use of technology to explore photography, photo editing and stop motion animation production. Within these units of work there are links to the English Curriculum in the areas of viewing and writing. The initial skills link in with the Viewing section of the English Curriculum as the students explore the impact of shot types on the audience in film and advertising. Students compose their own PowerPoint document comprised of examples of the different shot types and the impact that they are designed to have on the audience. For many students this is their first use of PowerPoint so it introduces them to the basic skills of importing photos, adding text boxes and manipulating the font. The basic photography skills introduced in this initial unit of work are expanded on through the use of Photo editing software to explore the artistic style of Surrealism made famous by artists such as Salvador Dali. The students use Paint.net and Art Rage to manipulate photographs to reflect the style of Surrealism. Skills addressed in manipulating their work include; altering image size, cropping, digital painting techniques and applying various effects. Stop Motion animation is another unit of work that is part of the Year 5 Art programme. Students are asked to produce their own Stop Motion animation films using the software Monkey Jam and Stop Motion Pro. Clear links to the English curriculum are evident as the students write their own narrative and storyboard their ideas before beginning the filming process. Students use their knowledge of photo composition to take photos, using web cams, and import these into the Stop Motion animation programme. These clips are then imported into Windows Movie Maker to allow the boys to edit their clips and add relevant audio, titles and visual effects Programmes needed - Windows Movie Maker, Monkey Jam, Paint.net, Art rage 2.5

Presentation Description:
The JASON Project is the use of innovation and exploration in education. Each student creates a profile and works through the missions chosen by the teacher according to which curriculum fits what they are studying. This project is open to parents as well as teachers and students; this enables parents to keep abreast of the advances in technology. The missions incorporate online journaling, lab work that uses various amounts and types of technologies, using boards to discuss the latest issues with the scientists that worked on the missions, connecting with students and teachers from across the world. The teachers have online resources at their disposal and can create virtual classrooms, keep in contact with students through this classroom, create assessments and mark them online. These assessments are stored and show the history of the students work. There is only limitation through lack of imagination within the classroom and I hope to spark the imagination of all who attend. The students who work on the JASON Project meet the student Argonaut via a video and can later speak to these Argonauts online about their experiences. With the use of JASON students can then apply to be an Argonaut and represent Australia. The programme is online and free. This course is introducing the JASON Project which is run by National Geographic. The software needed is simply the internet, good connection adobe and flash to view the worksheets and videos. The hardware; computers that have sound. The area of discipline is mainly science and geography. However the JASON Project does incorporate English, History and Mathematics to a degree. It is for teachers of year 3 to 9.

Presentation Description:
Using the 'backwards by design' principle to plan an interdisciplinary, technology-rich unit of work for middle school science Participants will be introduced to a unit of work that contains assessable tasks, course content and is designed to focus on engaging students using a variety of media and technology. There will be an opportunity to review templates, the unit of work, and the final product. There will also be an opportunity to give a frank appraisal of the design and execution. The unit had to cater for both laptop and non-laptop based classes based on the teachers' experiences and was a huge learning curve for both teachers and students. Participants can take this opportunity to begin to plan an interdisciplinary unit of work in their own discipline, work collaboratively with colleagues and participate in discussion evaluating the importance of effective, relevant and authentic incorporation of technology for learning and teaching. The unit of work being reviewed and reflected on is for Yr8 Ecology (Science) and incorporates interdisciplinary links to Mathematics, English, Design & Technology and Geography. There will be examples of student tasks for engagement, interest and assessment. The technology rich activities & resources in the unit include Tagexdo, Prezi, Moviemaker, class Wikis and Voice Thread. As this unit involves collaborative group tasks in addition to individual work, there is an opportunity to evaluate the preparation, use and reflection of student digital literacy and social networking skills through engagement with student inter & intra class discussion forums.

Presentation Description:
At a time when engaging students is becoming more difficult, we need to find connections to their world that inspire and motivate them. Through combining ICT and Web 2.0 technology, any number of creative possibilities can be explored, providing rich learning environments which utilise the 'technological world' students so easily navigate. This session will explore how Multimedia platforms and Web 2.0 technologies have been used in a classroom context to provide improved and enriched learning opportunities which cater for different learning styles and abilities. We will explore the functionality of interactive whiteboard software, and use wikis and blogs (Wordpress) to look at how we can link these to more established applications including Artrage, Photoshop Elements, Paint and MovieMaker. We will also look at how a simple scanner, digicamera or even a mobile phone can be used to greatest effect with these applications. Teachers can consider how to explore and provide open ended learning options which take students beyond the traditional limitations of the classroom. They will be given an opportunity to consider how they can relinquish the role of being at the centre of student learning by providing opportunities for students to engage in the rich exploration of topics, themes or issues.
