Presentation Title:e-Portfolios with Moodle
Presenter Organisation:Covenant Christian School, NSW
Session Type:Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

After successfully acquiring special funding in 2006, Rachel established online spaces for all of her classes, from Year 8 to 12, using an instance of Moodle called 'Beyond Borders'. Her students spend regular lessons in computer rooms interacting at Beyond Borders and establishing an e-Portfolio showcasing their work.

Moodle does not have a specific e-Portfolio system, but an approximation can be set up by using its existing tools creatively. A tour will be given of Mrs Collis' class web pages with an elucidation of how the project was setup, and the challenges and successes experienced thus far.

Of particular interest may be her use of Wikis and email forums, and her use of Moodle in combination with PowerPoint and Audacity.

Presentation Title:eTwinning with Moodle
Presenter Organisation:Northern Beaches Christian School, NSW
Session Type:Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

Created in 2006, Beyond Borders (http://moodle.nbcs.nsw.edu.au/bb) provides moderated webspaces for collaborative student communities. Teachers can quickly broaden their students’ perspective of their studies by inducting them into this online environment where they can interact with peers from around the world. The Beyond Borders vibe is ‘easy’ and ‘improvised’, so teachers can drive activity as they see fit and without the necessity of planning, and with plenty of scope for students to drive activity using the Web 2.0 tools that Moodle provides. Bring the students online and then just see where things lead.

A home-grown project driven and administered by a teacher at the coal-face, Beyond Borders is free, relevant to all subjects and ages, and has grown rapidly with 100s of students from over 30 schools in 9 different countries. For the technologically shy, a step-by-step manual and tutorial videos (created with Camtasia) are available from the ‘documents’ link at the public webpage.

A tour of the website will be given, showing real examples of text chats, forums, wikis, voicemail (using the opensource program ‘Audacity’), blogs and e-portfolios, often exploiting Moodle in unexpected ways.

Participants will be saturated with ideas and real-world examples of the uses of the tools available with Moodle, as well as invited to freely make use of Beyond Borders themselves in their teaching contexts.

Presentation Title:Integrating Software Applications Using Microsoft Learning Gateway Geography : The North West Cape
Presenter Organisation:Hale School
Session Type:Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

This is a regional Geography unit based on the North West Cape. During Year 10 all Hale boys attend a compulsory outdoor education week which is centred south of Exmouth on the eastern side of the cape. Consequently, this unit was planned to provide boys with a background to the area.

Regional geography arguably holds the most potential for IT possibilities. Although traditionally it has been difficult for students to envisage the geography of relatively remote regions, the use of Google Earth, the internet, and digitised photographs has enabled students to essentially conduct a virtual field trip. Other applications such as Microsoft Class Server, Learning Federation Objects, Microsoft office and Corel RAVE may be used to then provide less traditional learning experiences.

The challenge for teachers and support staff is how to bring all of this together into a single access point.

Presentation Title:From Thought to Expression: The development of Technology Rich Learning Activities
Presenter Organisation:Ivanhoe Grammar School, VIC
Session Type:Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

This Discovery session will be based around a reflective account of how I went about developing a structure to allow my Year 11 VCE Biology Student to produce higher quality learning artefacts through a process of choice and discussion. The project resulted in the development of research tasks that allowed students the scope to learn in a preferred style, but not be allowed to continually produce work in the same fashion.

The aim of the session is to unpack the processes we go through in the development of programs and structures so as to form a set of guidelines and ideas to help other teachers move more swiftly through "development" and into "delivery". Although the context of the material will be science-based the outcome - a set of ideas, principles and processes - could be applied to any subject area.

Presentation Title:iPodagogy - creating a 24/7 virtual classroom
Presenter Organisation:Wanganui Park Secondary College, Shepparton, VIC
Session Type:Discovery Session

Presentation Description:

In this session Andrew will discuss the impact that podcasting, vodcasting and discussion boards have had on student learning. He will show how it is possible to create a 24/7 virtual classroom that enables students to learn at the times that best suit them and in ways that best suit them. Paradoxically, teaching this way reduces teacher workload, reduces student stress, improves student learning and VCE results and frees up valuable class time to do activities that were previously not possible because of "pressure to get through the course before the exam!"

While the main focus of the session will be on the benefits of podcasting, and on idea-sparking examples of the work of teachers at his school, Andrew will also demonstrate the software and hardware he uses and recommends, so that participants can leave knowing what they need to do to create their own virtual classroom.
