Herald Sun: Hands-on tech boost
MELBOURNE - Tuesday, 31 August 2010

A visiting UK conference presenter has advised teachers to learn from the creative industries where, he says, "in a field like film they are learning all the time and if they don't they die".

Ewan McIntosh, director of NoTosh Limited (UK), presented at last week's Expanding Learning Horizons and School Tech conference which explored the theme "what is now possible" for educators and IT professionals.

The focus was on the impact of new technologies on the classroom and the move towards one-to-one learning.

McIntosh says: "Most of what occurs in schools is aimed at succeeding in exams or getting to the next stage of education. But employers are looking for something quite different. They want people who can invent new solutions and come up with new avenues of success."

Nathan Bailey, associate director of Monash University's eEducation Centre, says opportunities are lost when a teacher or lecturer stands before a class.

"The students are all listening and no one is taking advantage of all those people in the room," he says.

But personal laptops change that.

"Don't let the technology be a barrier to what you want to do with it," Bailey says.
